SINAM is a South Indian grassroots organization. Their goal is to empower oppressed communities (Dalits, or Untouchables, mostly) to help them onto a path of sustainable self directed development. The organization has existed for over 20 years now and has completed over 20 different types of projects. Their main strategy is to help people through farmers’ and womens’ self help groups, through child education and through health education. These self help groups are a form of (women’s) personal development promotion, skill training programmes and income generation programmes at the same time. All of these projects are never carried out in isolation – women in self help groups learn about kitchen garders, farmers are taught about organic farming and children in the sponsorprogramme receive education about their own health as well as extra tuition to support them with their schoolwork. In fact, health plays an important role in almost every project SINAM runs. You can learn more about SINAM and the way they represent themselves on the web here.
